EXTERNAL FLOOR VINYL
External floor graphics are printed, slip-rated vinyl graphics designed for application to outdoor pedestrian surfaces such as pavements, forecourts and external entrances. They are used where messaging needs to sit directly in the line of footfall rather than at eye level.

Directing Pedestrian Movement
External floor graphics help guide visitors, staff or members of the public along defined routes. This is particularly useful during temporary access changes, phased construction works or event crowd control where clear directional cues are needed at ground level.
Site Safety Messaging
Floor-applied graphics can highlight hazard awareness, restricted zones or pedestrian-only areas directly underfoot. Positioned at thresholds and entry points, they support existing safety signage without requiring additional structural fixings.
Supporting Temporary Access
During refurbishments or live estate works, entrances and walkways often change. External floor graphics provide a practical way to communicate revised routes while permanent signage is updated or removed.
Increasing Visibility at Entrances
At busy forecourts or high-street locations, ground-level messaging can attract attention before a visitor reaches the doorway. This is particularly relevant where vertical signage competes with surrounding visual clutter.
Campaign Messaging Outdoors
For retail promotions, public information campaigns or event activations, pavement graphics allow short-term messaging in open-air environments. Because they are removable, messaging can evolve without long-term substrate impact.
Expanding Marketing Areas
Where hoardings, walls or windows already carry branding, external floor graphics can extend that identity into the surrounding pedestrian space. This creates continuity across the site without installing additional rigid structures.

Frequently asked questions
How long do external floor graphics last?
External floor graphics should be specified as temporary installations. Lifespan depends on footfall levels, weather exposure, cleaning regimes and substrate condition. In moderate pedestrian areas they may remain serviceable for several weeks to a few months. In high-traffic entrances or grit-heavy environments, visible wear may occur sooner. Expected duration should always be discussed at quotation stage so material selection aligns with the site conditions.
Are external floor graphics suitable for all surfaces?
No. Adhesion is heavily dependent on the substrate being sound, clean and relatively smooth. Sealed concrete and stable tarmac are generally suitable. Uneven block paving, loose or friable concrete, resin-bound gravel and contaminated surfaces present higher risk. If there is uncertainty about the substrate, this should be raised before production so suitability can be assessed.
Are external floor graphics safe in wet conditions?
Slip-rated laminates can be specified for pedestrian environments, including external areas exposed to rain. However, slip performance can be affected by poor installation, worn laminate surfaces or debris build-up. Site operators remain responsible for ensuring suitability within their specific environment, particularly in publicly accessible areas.
Can vehicles drive over external floor graphics?
Standard external floor graphics are designed for pedestrian use. Regular vehicular trafficking will significantly reduce lifespan and may cause premature failure. If the application area includes vehicle movement, this must be identified at quotation stage so alternative solutions can be considered.
Will external floor graphics damage the surface when removed?
When applied to suitable, well-prepared substrates, removal should not cause structural damage. However, performance varies depending on surface condition, curing time of the substrate and environmental exposure. Recently laid or weak surfaces may be at greater risk. Surface condition should always be confirmed prior to installation.
How should the surface be prepared before installation?
The area must be clean, dry and free from dust, oil, moss or loose particles. Pressure washing is often required, followed by sufficient drying time. Installing onto damp or contaminated surfaces is one of the most common causes of edge lifting. Responsibility for surface preparation should be clearly agreed before installation.
Can external floor graphics be cleaned or jet washed?
Routine light cleaning is generally acceptable. However, aggressive mechanical cleaning or direct jet washing can shorten lifespan and damage laminate surfaces. If the area is subject to regular pressure washing as part of facilities management, this should be highlighted during specification.
Are external floor graphics suitable for long-term permanent signage?
They are not typically intended as permanent signage solutions. Continuous exposure to weather, abrasion and cleaning will eventually degrade the surface. For long-term external communication, rigid signage systems or fixed panels may be more appropriate. The intended duration of use should always be clarified at the outset to avoid misalignment between expectation and performance.
