Finishing Options for Large Format Print
Large-format printing does not end once the graphic has been produced. Finishing plays an important role in preparing printed materials so they can be installed, handled and used effectively in their intended environment. The correct finishing method ensures graphics are durable, easy to install and suitable for the way they will be displayed.
Finishing Options
Different applications require different finishing techniques. Banners, signage, window graphics and display materials often require additional preparation such as hemming, eyeletting, trimming or mounting to ensure the finished product performs as expected. At Wallace Print, finishing is carried out in-house as part of our production process so each item is prepared accurately before delivery or installation.
By understanding where and how a graphic will be used, our team can recommend the most appropriate finishing method to support both installation and long-term performance.
Hemmed Edges
Hemmed edges are commonly used for banner materials where additional strength is required around the perimeter of the graphic. The edge of the banner is folded and reinforced before being welded or stitched, creating a stronger border that helps prevent tearing when the banner is tensioned or fixed.
This finishing method is widely used for external banners, scaffold banners, building wraps and other large graphics that may be exposed to wind or movement.
Eyelets and Fixing Points
Eyelets are small metal rings inserted into the reinforced edges of banners to create secure fixing points. These allow banners to be attached using cable ties, bungee cords or rope, depending on the installation environment.
The spacing and positioning of eyelets can be adjusted depending on the size of the banner and the way it will be installed. Correct placement helps distribute tension evenly across the material and improves the lifespan of the graphic.
Pole Pockets
Pole pockets are often used when banners need to be suspended from poles, frames or exhibition structures. The edge of the banner is folded to create a sleeve through which a pole can be inserted, allowing the graphic to hang cleanly and remain evenly tensioned.
This finishing option is commonly used for hanging banners in retail environments, exhibitions, public venues and large indoor spaces.
Trimming and Precision Cutting
Printed graphics are trimmed or precision cut to ensure accurate final sizing before installation. This may involve straight trimming for standard signage or precision cutting for shaped graphics, display panels and bespoke installations.
Accurate cutting ensures graphics align correctly during installation and fit precisely within frames, panels or mounting systems.
Lamination and Surface Protection
Lamination can be applied to many printed graphics to improve durability and protect the surface from wear. This process applies a protective film over the printed graphic, helping to reduce scuffing, moisture exposure and general handling damage.
Different laminate finishes are available depending on the application, including matt, gloss, textured or anti-slip surfaces.
Mounting to Rigid Panels
Some graphics are mounted onto rigid materials such as Foamex, Dibond or display boards. This process bonds the printed graphic to the panel, creating a durable finished sign or display board suitable for internal or external use.
Mounting ensures the graphic remains smooth and stable, particularly for signage, wall graphics and display systems.
Preparing Graphics for Installation
Finishing is often the final step before graphics are delivered to site or prepared for installation. By completing all finishing processes in-house, we ensure each graphic is supplied ready for use, reducing delays and helping installations run smoothly.
If you are unsure which finishing methods are required for your project, our team can advise based on the graphic size, installation method and environment where the print will be displayed.

Frequently asked questions
What finishing options are available for large format print?
Large format graphics can be finished in several ways depending on how they will be installed or displayed. Common finishing options include hemming banner edges, inserting eyelets, creating pole pockets, trimming to size, laminating prints and mounting graphics to rigid panels. The correct finishing method ensures the graphic can be installed securely and performs well in its intended environment.
Why are hems added to banner edges?
Hemming reinforces the edges of banner materials to improve strength and durability. By folding and welding or stitching the edge of the banner, the perimeter becomes more resistant to tearing when tension is applied during installation. Hemmed edges are typically used for scaffold banners, building wraps and other external banner installations.
What are eyelets and why are they used?
Eyelets are metal rings inserted into the edges of banners to create secure fixing points. They allow the banner to be attached using cable ties, rope or bungee cords depending on the installation method. Eyelets help distribute tension evenly across the banner and make installation quicker and more reliable.
When are pole pockets used on banners?
Pole pockets are used when a banner needs to be suspended from a pole or frame. A sleeve is created along one or more edges of the banner so that a pole can pass through it. This finishing method is often used for hanging banners in retail spaces, exhibitions, sports venues and large indoor environments.
Can large format graphics be laminated?
Yes. Lamination is often applied to printed graphics to protect the surface and extend their lifespan. Laminates can help reduce scuffing, improve moisture resistance and add visual finishes such as matt, gloss or textured surfaces. The most suitable laminate will depend on where the graphic will be installed and how it will be used.
Can printed graphics be mounted onto rigid panels?
Yes. Printed graphics are frequently mounted onto rigid substrates such as Foamex, Dibond, acrylic or display board. Mounting creates a stable panel suitable for signage, retail displays or exhibition graphics. This finishing method ensures the graphic remains flat and durable once installed.
How are finishing options chosen for a project?
Finishing methods are selected based on how the graphic will be installed, the environment it will be used in and the size of the printed material. For example, external banners may require hemmed edges and eyelets, while interior signage may require mounting to rigid panels. During the quotation stage our team can advise on the most appropriate finishing options.
Can Wallace Print supply graphics ready for installation?
Yes. All finishing processes are completed in-house so that graphics are supplied ready for installation or delivery. This includes trimming, hemming, eyeletting, lamination and mounting where required. If your project also requires installation, our team can discuss suitable preparation during the quotation stage to ensure everything is produced correctly.
