Block Out Vinyl
Block Out Vinyl

Block-out vinyl is used where show-through from the surface beneath needs to be reduced or eliminated, such as covering existing graphics, bold background colours or unwanted light transmission.
There are two distinct types of block-out vinyl commonly used in print applications: grey back vinyl and true blockout vinyl, each suited to different requirements.
Grey back vinyl features a pigmented grey adhesive designed to significantly reduce show-through from the substrate once applied. It is commonly used for wall graphics, overlays and refurbishment projects where the underlying surface is visually inconsistent. While grey back vinyl greatly improves opacity, it should not be considered a specialist blackout film and may still allow some light transmission in strong backlit conditions.
True blockout vinyl incorporates a dedicated black core layer between the face film and adhesive. This construction is designed specifically to prevent light transmission, making it suitable for applications such as window coverage, lightbox blocking and situations where maximum opacity is required. Our team can advise on whether grey back or true blockout vinyl is the most appropriate option for your application.
Both options can be paired with protective laminates to improve durability, resistance to handling and overall longevity. Adhesive choice and finish will be specified based on surface type, environment and intended lifespan.

MATERIAL DESCRIPTION
We supply block-out and grey back self-adhesive vinyls suitable for internal and external graphic applications. Materials are selected based on performance requirements rather than brand, ensuring the correct construction is used for the job rather than assuming all grey back vinyls offer full blackout performance.
Block-out vinyl is commonly used for cover-up graphics, window vinyls, refurbishment overlays and temporary or permanent wall graphics. All vinyls are printed in full colour using large format digital printing to ensure consistent colour and clean detail.
Where graphics need to conform around curves, recesses or textured surfaces, a specialist conformable vinyl will be recommended instead, as standard block-out materials are not designed for complex surface profiles.
If you’re unsure which vinyl construction is required, our team can assess the application and recommend a suitable option before print.

Single Sided– Block out self adhesive vinyl can be digitally printed direct to the face of the material on our large format printers using UV cured inks which offer market leading print quality, robustness and longevity.
Matt Lamination Protect your printed graphics with a matt over laminate and give your print a completely flat appearance which will not reflect light. Available on prints up to 1600mm wide
Gloss Lamination Protect your printed graphics with a gloss over laminate and give your print shiny high gloss appearance which brings out colours and reflection. Available on prints up to 1600mm wide
Dry-wipe Lamination Transform the surface of your Block out self adhesive vinyl into a dry-wipe board capable of being written on with dry wipe pens. Available in both gloss and matt dry wipe on prints up to 1600mm wide.
Anti-Graffiti Lamination Once applied to the surface of Block out self adhesive vinyl our anti-graffiti laminate will give a high gloss finish whilst offering protection to the print and the ability to clean away pen, paint and spray damage.
Anti-Slip Lamination perfect for any material which will be used for floor application our anti-slip laminates cover both internal and external applications and can range from 3 -12 months life span.
UV Protection Lamination when looking to use your Block out self adhesive vinyl externally especially in sunny locations our UV shield laminates can reduce sun degradation extending the life of the printing.
Crystal Protection Lamination will offer a physical coating protecting the print surface from damage and giving it a slightly textured matt finish. This makes it more robust to any surface marking.
Square Cutting – Block out self adhesive vinyl can be supplied cut to any required square or rectangular panel size within the maximum sheet size. For guaranteed accuracy all of our material is cut on a laser guided cutting table
Simple Shapes – including radius corners, circles, triangles and basic shapes are possible with a high level of accuracy and quality of finish when cut on our laser guided cutting tables.
Complex Shapes – Complex shapes are possible when cut on our market leading Kongsberg X44 cutting table which is capable of drag knife and router cutting.
Plotter Cut – using our 1600mm wide camera driven Summa and Graphtec plotter cutters we can transform your printed vinyl into cut design, for example lettering for the side of a vehicle or a cut to shape logo for a wall. Plotter cut graphics are supplied with application tape for easy fitting.
CAD cutting – Our camera driven Aristo and Esko Kongsberg cutting tables are capable of cutting your design to any shape including adding creases, scores or even v-cuts.
Typical Applications
Block-out and grey back vinyls are commonly used for cover-up graphics, refurbishment overlays, window coverage and situations where underlying colours, graphics or light sources need to be reduced or concealed. Applications include temporary or permanent wall graphics, promotional window vinyls and panel overlays.Opacity & Adhesive Options
Grey back vinyl uses a pigmented adhesive layer to significantly reduce show-through from the surface beneath. It is typically supplied with a permanent adhesive and is suitable where consistent visual coverage is required. Where maximum light blocking is essential, a true blockout construction may be recommended instead. Protective laminates can be applied to improve resistance to handling, cleaning and environmental wear, helping extend the usable life of the print.Surface Suitability & Printing
Standard block-out vinyls are designed for flat or gently curved surfaces. For applications involving tight curves, recesses or complex profiles, a specialist conformable vinyl will be required. All vinyl graphics are produced in-house using large format full-colour digital printing to ensure clean detail and colour consistency.
Frequently asked questions
What is block-out vinyl used for?
Block-out vinyl is used to reduce or eliminate show-through from surfaces beneath a printed graphic. It is commonly specified for covering existing signage, masking bold or uneven background colours, and producing window or wall graphics where visual consistency is important. Depending on construction, block-out vinyl can also be used for double-sided window graphics and applications where light transmission needs to be minimised rather than eliminated entirely. It is widely used across retail, exhibitions and point-of-sale environments.
Is block-out vinyl suitable for outdoor use?
Block-out vinyl can be suitable for external use when specified correctly. Performance will depend on the vinyl construction, laminate choice, exposure level and installation method. It adheres well to smooth, non-porous surfaces such as glass, metal and acrylic. For short-term or internal applications where full opacity is not required, a standard white vinyl may be more appropriate. Our team can advise on suitability based on environment and expected lifespan.
How is block-out vinyl applied?
Block-out vinyl is applied in the same way as other self-adhesive vinyls, onto a clean, flat surface using controlled pressure to ensure even adhesion. Due to the thickness and opacity of some block-out constructions, professional installation is often recommended to achieve a smooth finish, particularly for window graphics or large panels. Installation support can be arranged where required.
What materials are comparable or alternatives?
For transparent or glass-effect graphics, clear vinyl is more suitable. Where one-way visibility is required, perforated window film may be a better option. Grey back vinyl can be used where surface show-through needs to be reduced but full light blocking is not essential. The most appropriate material will depend on whether opacity, light control or transparency is the primary requirement.
